How do I start A MECU Credit Card Balance Transfer?

Existing MECU Visa card holder?

If you are an existing MECU cardholder, you can complete a balance transfer request by:

  • Logging into MECU Online Banking and selecting the Visa Credit Card link located in your loan accounts section, or
  • Call Cardholder Services: 866-820-3867
  • To report a lost or stolen card call: 866-820-1039
Not yet a MECU Visa card holder?

If you are not currently a MECU cardholder, you can start the balance transfer process by applying for a new MECU Visa Credit Card.

Visa's "Tap to Add Card" Service

Visa's "Tap to Add Card" service will allow members to add their Visa debit card or Visa credit card to a digital wallet by simply tapping the physical card on the NFC-enabled smartphone. This is a faster, more secure, and convenient way to add a card, as it creates a unique token that replaces the cardholder’s account number.

  • Tap: Hold physical Visa card against smartphone.
  • Add: The service will automatically find the card and begin the process of adding it to a participating digital wallet.
  • Secure: The process creates a unique, secure network token for the card, which protects the card number from exposure and reduces fraud.
  • Verify: Members will need to verify their card by contacting MECU and notifying us that they are attempting to add their card to their wallet (Apple Pay, Samsung Wallet, Google Pay). We will need to confirm the phone number associated with the device is already attached to the member’s profile. Recent phone number changes will require a delay in MECU authorizing the card to the wallet, as enhanced due diligence verification is required.
  • Speed and Convenience: It's a much faster way to add a card to your digital wallet, especially compared to manually typing in the card details.
  • Security: It reduces the risk of errors and fraud associated with manual entry by using tokenization.
  • Error Reduction: It eliminates the possibility of mistakes when entering your card information by hand.

You can use this feature on a smartphone with a participating digital wallet, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Wallet.

Minimize your risk of credit card fraud

Contact Visa and report your card stolen at 866-820-1039 or ext. 1595.

If you recognize an unauthorized transaction, contact MECU immediately. Please call 866-820-2958 or send a secure message through Online or Mobile Banking.

Attend a MECU Shred event and shred documents with personal identifying information.

Review receipts, credit card and bank statements to be able to report any fraud right away.

Make sure you verify that a website is authentic before making a purchase. A secure URL should begin with “https” rather than “http.” The “s” in “https” stands for secure, which indicates that the site is using a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificate.

If you have a card with a magnetic strip, use a strong magnet to demagnetize the strip on the back of the card. Chips are a bit tougher to neutralize. You can cut chips with a pair of scissors, or even break them apart with a hammer.

Next, cut the card into at least three pieces. If you're having trouble cutting through the plastic, try bending it back and forth a few times to weaken it, then cut along the bend.

Destroying documents with your personal information reduces the likelihood of becoming an identity theft victim.

Scammers can claim to be from your card issuer or bank and ask for personal information. Do not provide credit card information to representatives who call you unexpectedly.

MECU will never contact you by phone, email or text message to ask for personal information. We will only ask you to provide this information to verify your identity when you call us directly.

As a rule of thumb, exercise awareness anytime you’re using a public pay station or when your card leaves your sight. Whenever possible, choose the pump closest to the building. They’re closest to employees and the least likely to have been tampered with. Avoid using a debit card, if possible. Should you be forced to use debit, run it as a credit card so you don’t have to enter your PIN.

MECU helped improve my financial well-being by lowering my credit card interest through a balance transfer, saving me money for expenses like daycare.
